Ice machine for a convenience store (fountain + bagged ice)

Updated 2026-09-04. Independent guide — not a dealer quote.

A convenience store or gas-station c-store is fountain cups plus bagged retail ice, not restaurant covers. The soda well, the self-serve station, and the bag merchandiser by the door are different loads. Putting 70 summer bags on a 38 lb undercounter leftover, or expecting a chewable nugget head to fill hard-cube bags, is how the cooler is empty at 4 p.m. and the fountain is still short at 6.

This is a planning page from published application factors and current OEM sheets. It is not a dealer quote, not a review score, and not a health-code opinion. Confirm electrical, plumbing, clearance, and sanitation with the people who inspect the building.

Published fountain and bagged-ice factors

Application charts treat c-store ice as ounces of ice per cup on a peak day, then tell you to add packaged / bagged ice as its own line. Those are dealer/application rules of thumb, not a manufacturer warranty and not a lab measurement. Convert ounces to pounds as 16 oz = 1 lb and label the conversion.

Published line Factor What the source is talking about
Atlantic Store Equipment, convenience-store fountain Cup size × peak-day drink count Table says to include refills, melted-ice loss, and the busiest seasonal volume. Their worked c-store example uses a weighted cup test of 0.42 lb per transaction.
The Kitchen Spot, convenience store / QSR / drive-through beverage 5 oz ice / 10 oz drink; 6 / 12; 8 / 16; 10 / 20; 12 / 24; 16 / 32 Same application table already cited on the sizing page and the restaurant guide. Converted: 0.31 / 0.375 / 0.50 / 0.625 / 0.75 / 1.00 lb per drink. Table marked +20% for a safe margin.
Memphis Ice (Ice-O-Matic-style convenience-store beverage) 6 oz ice / 12 oz drink; 10 / 20; 16 / 32 Live Memphis Ice sizing page (retrieved 2026-09-04). Converted: 0.375 / 0.625 / 1.00 lb per drink. Same page: cold plate +50%; packaged ice = weight per bag × bags sold per day.
Ice-O-Matic Global Product Guide (Part 6203, printed 07-12) Same 6 / 10 / 16 oz convenience-store beverage line 2012 OEM chart. Matches the Memphis Ice convenience-store rows. Cold plate 50% more; package ice weight per bag × bags sold. Dated reprint — use it for the oz line, not for current model ratings.
GoFoodservice, convenience store 5 oz / 7–12 oz cup; 8 oz / 12–16; 12 oz / 16–24 Converted: 0.31 / 0.50 / 0.75 lb per cup. Cold plates 45% more than the beverage calculation (their figure, not Memphis’s 50%). Packaged ice: 10 lbs × bags sold per day.
Ice Machines Sales, c-store / gas station chart Bagged ice 20–70+ bags/day (summer), 10–30 bags/day (winter); fountain station 50–100 lb/day; self-serve beverages 1 lb per customer Live industry page (retrieved 2026-09-04). Their copy also says about two-thirds of bagged-ice sales fall between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The 50–100 lb fountain band is a low-volume station, not Atlantic’s 500-drink example.

The VenueIce sizing table already has a quick-service row (0.5–1.0 lb per customer, or drink-size rules). Use Atlantic’s cup × count method when you have POS drink counts. Use Kitchen Spot / Memphis / Ice-O-Matic ounces when you know cup size and want a published oz-per-cup line. Use GoFoodservice’s 10 lb × bags when the store sells packaged ice. Use Ice Machines Sales’ 20–70+ summer bags only as their published sales band — count the bags you actually move on the peak day. Do not fold bags into the fountain cup count. Do not copy a restaurant 1.5 lb/guest cover factor into a fountain well.

Worked example (a): fountain-only summer peak

Atlantic’s published convenience-store example is 500 fountain drinks on a peak summer day, with a weighted cup test of 0.42 lb of ice per transaction.

  • Fountain demand: 500 × 0.42 = 210 lb
  • Their refill and loss allowance (store records in that example): 25 lb
  • Peak-day subtotal: 235 lb
  • 20% reserve: 47 lb
  • Target: 282 lb/day — they call the practical shopping range approximately 300 lb/day

That 0.42 lb average sits between Kitchen Spot’s 6 oz / 12 oz line (0.375 lb) and 8 oz / 16 oz line (0.50 lb). It is below Memphis / Ice-O-Matic’s 10 oz / 20 oz line (0.625 lb). If the same 500 drinks were all 20 oz cups on the Memphis / Kitchen Spot 10 oz-ice line: 500 × 10 oz = 5,000 oz ÷ 16 = 312.5 lb; Kitchen Spot +20% → about 375 lb. If they were all 12 oz cups on the 6 oz-ice line: 500 × 6 oz = 3,000 oz ÷ 16 = 187.5 lb; +20% → about 225 lb. Weigh a fill of each cup size you actually sell. Atlantic says a physical cup test beats a generic average.

Ice Machines Sales’ 50–100 lb/day fountain-station band is a different store: a small soda well, not 500 peak-day drinks. A 50–100 lb fountain line can sit on a compact undercounter if the bin covers the afternoon pull. Atlantic’s 282–300 lb fountain target is past every undercounter 90/70 column in this directory (largest is Manitowoc UYF-0190A at 140 lb). That 300 lb-class fountain job is a modular cube or nugget head (or a dispenser that keeps making ice), not a 38 lb KM-81 leftover.

GoFoodservice’s cold-plate adder is 45% on top of the beverage calculation. Memphis / Ice-O-Matic’s is 50%. Only add it if the fountain actually uses a cold plate. Do not stack both.

Worked example (b): fountain + bagged-ice merchandiser day

Same 500-drink Atlantic fountain (282 lb after their 20% reserve). Bagged ice is a second worksheet row, not a fudge factor. Atlantic’s own sizing worksheet has a line for bagging or off-site use. GoFoodservice’s packaged-ice line is 10 lbs × bags sold per day. Ice-O-Matic’s 2012 chart and Memphis Ice say weight per bag × bags sold — use 10 lb only when the bag on the rack is a 10 lb bag.

Ice Machines Sales’ published c-store bag band:

Bag line (Ice Machines Sales band × GoFoodservice 10 lb/bag) Pounds of ice Keep it separate from
Summer 20 bags 20 × 10 = 200 lb Fountain 282 lb
Summer 70 bags 70 × 10 = 700 lb Fountain 282 lb
Winter 10 bags 10 × 10 = 100 lb Fountain (winter drinks are their own count)
Winter 30 bags 30 × 10 = 300 lb Fountain

Peak-day totals if you add the lines (do not average them into one brochure number):

  • Fountain 282 + summer 20 bags (200) = 482 lb of ice that day, two jobs
  • Fountain 282 + summer 70 bags (700) = 982 lb of ice that day, two jobs

The 70-bag summer line alone is already past the 400–550 lb modular heads in this directory on a 90/70 column (Scotsman C0330MA-1 288 lb; Ice-O-Matic CIM0430A 320 lb on the PDF we opened; Manitowoc IYT0450A 378 lb AHRI). A 70-bag plant is a larger head than this directory carries, two heads, or wholesale bags in a merchandiser. Ice Machines Sales themselves say high-traffic hot-climate stores can sell significantly more than 70 bags — count the door.

If the store buys bagged ice wholesale and only merchandises it, the bagged production line is zero. You need a merchandiser, not a second cuber. Ice Machines Sales list bagged-ice merchandisers in a 100–600 lb storage band. We do not have merchandiser SKUs in this directory and we do not invent them.

Atlantic’s seasonal-restaurant reserve band is 15–25%; their outdoor / highly variable band is 25–30%. Their c-store example already used 20% on the fountain line. Ice Machines Sales treat bagged ice as seasonal (summer band vs winter band). Pick the reserve the source that matches the line uses. Do not stack every chart on both rows.

Form factor: fountain well vs bagging plant vs wholesale bags

Atlantic, GoFoodservice, and Ice Machines Sales draw the same split: one plant for drinks, another for bags (or no maker at all if bags come from a distributor).

Job Typical form Do not use it for
Small fountain well, Ice Machines Sales 50–100 lb band, 115 V alcove Compact undercounter or cubelet (KM-81, C-80, CU0415) 500-drink Atlantic peak; bagging 20–70 bags
Fountain well that needs a 78–90 lb built-in bin Large undercounter (KM-161, UYF-0140/0190, ICEU150) Overnight bag-out; 300 lb-class 90/70 make
Self-serve ice-and-water at the fountain Ice-and-water dispenser (small hopper) — HID525 is the directory example Filling 10 lb retail bags from a 25 lb hopper
Atlantic ~300 lb fountain class, or chewable soda ice Modular nugget / Pearl head + bin or dispenser (RNP0320A, GEM0450A) Hard-cube bagging
In-house bagging Modular hard cube head + bin, or a modular head on a bagger Fountain nugget; a 90 lb undercounter leftover
Wholesale bags only Merchandiser (no maker) Assuming the fountain machine will refill the rack

Undercounter / countertop is one 115 V cabinet with a built-in bin (or a small dispenser). Ice Machines Sales put undercounters at 50–350 lb/day make for c-store back rooms and countertop dispensers at 100–400 lb/day. GoFoodservice’s undercounter band is 50–500 lb/day make with 7–250 lb built-in storage. This directory’s largest undercounter bin is 90 lb. The bin, not the “up to 193 lb” headline, is the afternoon fountain constraint. Form-factor background: undercounter vs modular vs countertop.

Modular head + bin is how you get Atlantic’s 300 lb fountain class and any in-house bagging plant. Production and storage are separate SKUs. GoFoodservice’s ice-bagger copy is explicit: a modular ice machine mounts on top of the bagger; output matches the head; size the bagger to the head, not the other way around. The smallest modular cube heads in this directory are the 400–550 lb class. That is a back-room plant, often hardwired, not a fountain-alcove plug-in.

Nugget / cubelet for fountain, hard cube for bags. GoFoodservice assigns cubelet / nugget to “fountain drinks and soda stations” and crescent / half-cube to general beverage and bagging. Atlantic’s ice-type table assigns nugget to soft drinks and half cube to fountain / iced coffee; flake is display ice, not a 10 lb bag. Memphis / Ice-O-Matic treat packaged ice as a weight × bags line with no ice-type change — the cube still has to survive the bag and the merchandiser. A cocktail-bar gourmet is the wrong plant for either job. See cube vs half-dice vs nugget vs flake.

Flake (Hoshizaki F-330BAK) is a salad-bar / seafood cabinet on Hoshizaki’s own page. It is not a fountain cube and it is not a bagging cube.

Current undercounters and a small fountain dispenser (OEM sheets)

Figures are manufacturer ratings. Full citations live on each directory page. Street prices omitted. These cabinets are fountain-alcove and small-station tools unless you also have a dump bin or a second plant for bags.

A 200 lb-class head is not in this directory today. Do not assume a 22″ head drops onto a 30″ or 44″ lid without the top kit on the current sheet. Follow the clean/sanitize interval on the machine sheet. We are not writing a health-department letter.

Power, drain, air, filter (fountain alcove and back room)

Many c-store ice rooms are a hot hole: one circuit behind the fountain, a soda machine dumping heat, a door that opens onto the lot, and a louver someone boxed in. The bagging plant, if you have one, is usually a different room. Read the sheet before the quote.

  • 115 V cord-and-plug on the compact undercounters above (C-80, KM-81, KM-161, UYF-0140/0190). A KM-520MAJ is a hardwired 115 V / 20 A-class head. CIM0430A’s cited sheet is 115 V, 11.0 A min. circuit, 15 A fuse — confirm cord vs junction box on the current PDF. HID525 is a corded 115 V dispenser on the cited PDFs. Two cabinets plus a fountain on one alcove circuit is an electrician question.
  • Drain. Gravity to a nearby floor drain or sink tail if the sheet’s fall and fitting work (KM-81 / KM-161 / KM-520: 3/4″ FPT on those current pages; NEO family sheet: 1/2″ FPT ice-making drain and 1/2″ FPT bin drain). Hoshizaki accessory HS-5061 is the listed drain pump on AM/C/KM compact units. Melt water is not optional. A bagger has its own drain path — use the bagger sheet.
  • Air / alcove. Front-in / front-out cabinets (C-80BAK, KM-81BAK, KM-161BAK) exist for tight holes. Modular heads still need the clearance on the sheet (CIM0430A PDF: 6″ intake and exhaust). A boxed-in fountain closet in August is not a 70/50 lab. Use the 90/70 column if you have it. See air-cooled vs water-cooled.
  • Seasonal summer derate. Kitchen Spot: a 90° room with ~70° water can cut make by 15% or more. GoFoodservice: listed capacities are under ideal conditions; “actual output may be 10–15% lower in hot environments.” Ice Machines Sales size bagged ice on a summer band for a reason. Compare the 90/70 column to the July fountain + bag target, not the January 70/50 brochure number.
  • Heat into the alcove. Cited air-cooled rejection: C-80BAK 1,400 BTU/h; KM-81BAK 1,800; KM-161BAK 2,800; NEO U-140 / U-190 family sheet 2,150 average / 2,600 peak; F-330BAK 3,400; CIM0430A sheet 5,100; KM-520MAJ 7,000. Those BTUs sit next to a soda machine. Water-cooled CIM0430W on the same Ice-O-Matic PDF lists 169 gal/100 lb condenser water. Many cities restrict once-through cooling.
  • Filter. Ice-machine filter, not “the building’s drinking fountain cartridge.” See filters and descalers.
  • Water pressure. Hoshizaki compact and KM-520 pages list about 10–113 psig. Manitowoc NEO and the CIM0430 sheet list 20–80 psi. Too little pressure and harvest fails.
  • Do not use a household countertop nugget machine as if it were NSF commercial equipment unless the listing says it is.

What this page is not

  • Not a code letter. NSF marks and manuals are on the sheets. We do not say an install “meets” a health department.
  • Not a review. No scores, no invented “we installed N of these.”
  • Not a price list.
  • Not a cafe, bar, restaurant, hotel, church, office, or food-truck guide. Those venues keep their own pages. Restaurant covers and cocktail wells are a different worksheet — see ice machine for a restaurant and best ice for a cocktail bar.
  • Not a bagged-ice wholesale catalog. If you buy bags and only merchandise them, you do not size a cuber for that line.
  • Not healthcare. Dispenser families sold into hospitals stay on their own spec. HID525 appears here only as a self-serve ice-and-water cabinet with a 25 lb hopper.
